Kay HarrisonOwner/Teacher, Piano/Wind Instruments
Kay Harrison started piano at the age of five. She was not given a choice as her mother desired that she played. Kay advanced quickly and by fifth grade she was playing Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. She began teaching at 13 when the only piano teacher in her small town moved. She continued teaching through her teen years. Kay studied music education at Evangel University where she studied piano with Dr. June Kean and saxophone with Beth McLellan. After rehabilitating from a near fatal accident in 1974, Kay began to teach out of her home. In 1995 she became the band director at Crosspoint Christian School. At the same time she began teaching band, jazz band and choir to homeschoolers. In 1997 Kay moved her studio into a large commercial building. Seventeen years ago she moved the studio to Sullivan. She teaches band instruments, piano and harp. Kay expects her students to excel in their music education always helping them reach their goals. She has taught Down’s syndrome students, students with autism, students with developmental problems and students who excelled and achieved perfect ACT scores. No matter the ability of the student, Kay tries to bring them to their highest level of excellence. Above all that though, she points students to the Giver of their gifts and reminds them that in all situations, we live, we sing, we play all for an audience of One.
